Summary:

Vianne Rocher and her daughter Anouk sweep into the conservative town of Lansquenet in France. She opens a chocolate shop right across from the church on the first day of Lent. The local priest, Pere Reynaud, think that opening a chocolate shop when the town is supposed to be giving up sweets is completely out of line and vows to stop Vianne from corrupting, so to speak, his quiet town.

The book deals with the ever-changing ideas and opinions of a once small town with small-minded ideas and the effects of a modern, open-minded woman. It shows the different viewpoints of Vianne and Pere Reynaud and how they each live their lives. Through their journal entries, you get to know the townspeople and whether or not they want agree with these new changes occurring in Lansequenet.

Opinion:

I absolutely loved this book. The plot was unique and very original, but believable. The story line flowed and there weren’t any abrupt changes. The detail used to describe each of the townspeople was excellent and you really got to know them. The book was beautifully written and one of the best books I’ve ever read.
